Our story

Smart Carping was founded in 2006 by Ian Gemson, a keen angler with a background stretching back to childhood of avid coarse and successful match fishing...

Ian Gemson
I started fishing as a child for what ever came along, mainly in the area of the Hampshire/Surrey border with many of the now well known lakes only a few minutes away. I would fish for pike, roving the local lakes with a simple spinning rod and later fished with much success in matches on rivers, canals and lakes. Watching huge fish during the close season and seeing a few being caught infected me with the carp fishing bug.

Ian's personality led him naturally into teaching - he is approachable, friendly and patient. When he took up specimen angling he found that the people who approached him greatly appreciated his down to earth advice and took a lot from his common-sense approach and ability to think like a fish. Smart Carping was the logical progression.
