Testimonial - Michael Plews
My wife had asked what I would like for a birthday present and I had quite liked the idea of improving my carp fishing technique. After a bit of a lay off having suffered at golf, I had returned to fishing and had another go at carp fishing. I was having reasonable success at a runs water but wanted to improve for some other waters I now have access to (noticeably harder and very weedy!).
I had found Ian?s website (which looked good) and spoke with him on the phone, he was just as helpful as his website tutorials. Consequently I booked a coaching session with him at Thorpe Lea Fishery arranging to meet at 7am on a Sunday morning (one of the few days I get a lay in), which meant a 4am wake up which sounded more like work on a Monday morning!
Ian is very friendly, knowledgeable about carp and fun to be with! He assured me that we needed to start at 7am to get through all the information he had to impart, and he was right! The day went extremely quickly with a huge transfer of information which has equipped me no end for fishing lots of venues including very weedy waters which I would now feel quite comfortable fishing.
There is a lot of hands on learning, explaining the various advantages/disadvantages of rigs and various bits of kit and bait. We both come from a match fishing background which means neither of us are keen on ?camping?, which appears to be a very popular form of carp fishing. The techniques Ian explained are very much geared to catching fish and give a major advantage as far as I?m concerned over ?camping?! Thorpe Lea is very much a runs water and one is virtually assured of catching, great for confidence building but for me the real value is the information imparted by Ian.
Perhaps the most amusing part of the day was when Ian was relating how a friend of his had come to fish here and had his marker rod pulled in by a carp. Hmm thought I, that would be worth seeing. What should happen later but the lady at the next peg was telling us we had a run on one our rods, interestingly the only rod in the water had no bait/hook attached and was the marker rod. It?s the only thing he didn?t explain how to do!
I very much like value for money and although some may think they can?t afford the fees, I would have no hesitation in suggesting forget the new rods or reels and invest in some tuition. I can say without hesitation that this will result in far more fish on the bank which ultimately is why we go fishing! Well unless of course you like the camping?
